Most circuits earn a reputation lap by lap over decades. This one opened with a title decider and has crowned world champions ever since.
Yas Marina opened in 2009 with a season finale and has closed the Formula 1 calendar in most years since. The race begins in daylight and finishes under floodlights, and the transition through sunset is the circuit’s signature: track temperature drops sharply through the race and shifts the balance of the cars. The layout was substantially reprofiled in 2021, opening out the hairpin and the marina section, and the racing has been better for it ever since.

Turn 1
A tight left immediately after the start, and a regular first lap flashpoint.
Turn 5
Heavy braking at the end of the long back straight and the primary overtaking point on the lap.
Turn 9
Reprofiled in 2021 into a faster, more open corner that improved the following section considerably.
Marina section
Through the harbour past the yachts and under the Yas Hotel, the most recognisable stretch of the circuit.
Final corner
Onto the start/finish straight, deciding the run to the line.
