A Milestone Moment for Middle East Marathon History
On 1 February 2026, the Middle East’s oldest international road race – the Dubai Marathon 2026 – will celebrate its Silver Jubilee. This landmark 25th edition marks another milestone in a legacy of athletic excellence, promising enhanced festivities and elite-level competition. Registration for the Silver Anniversary Race has been open since mid-April 2025.
Global Prestige and Record-Breaking Legacy
Famous for its flat, fast course and staged under the continued patronage of the Dubai Sports Council, the race draws elite athletes and passionate amateurs from across the globe. With participants from more than 140 nations expected, it remains a pillar of Dubai’s sporting calendar and a standout fixture on the international marathon circuit.
The first marathon in the Middle East to be accorded World Athletics Gold Label status in 2011, Dubai’s flagship road race has become synonymous with record-breaking performances and world-class competition.
Dubai’s Enduring Commitment to Sport and Wellness
Many legendary athletes have tested themselves on Dubai’s demanding route. Among them, Haile Gebrselassie famously clocked the second-fastest marathon time in history during his debut appearance in 2008 — a performance that instantly elevated the race’s global stature.
The Dubai Sports Council continues to champion the event, highlighting its role in enhancing the emirate’s global sports profile and promoting a culture of health and fitness among a population now exceeding four million. The marathon also delivers a substantial boost to the local economy, driving tourism and hospitality footfall.
Inclusive Racing for All Abilities
During the space of 25 years, the Dubai Marathon has evolved into one of the top ten marathons in the world, attracting the aristocracy of distance athletics alongside thousands of outstanding amateur runners each year. Running in parallel with the full 42.195km marathon, the 2026 edition will also feature a 10km road race and a 4km fun run, extending an inclusive experience to participants at all fitness levels. Registration via the official website https://www.dubaimarathon.org/ remains open until 31 January 2026.
A Year of Celebration: Words from the Race Director
Race Director Peter Connerton set the tone for a very special event back in April 2025, saying:
“In coordination with the Dubai Sports Council and other government partners, we are delighted to announce the opening of registration for the 25th Dubai Marathon. To mark the silver jubilee, we are preparing a year-long series of special events leading up to race day.
“Since the inaugural edition, the Dubai Marathon has steadily risen to the top tier of global road racing. Highlights such as the 2008 race featuring Haile Gebrselassie and the ground-breaking 2018 event where seven runners clocked sub-2:05 times for the first time in marathon history have cemented its place among the world’s most prestigious marathons.”
Rising Stars and Recent Champions
Recent editions of the Dubai Marathon have spotlighted a new wave of rising stars. In 2017, Ethiopia’s Tamirat Tola — now the reigning Olympic champion — claimed a resounding victory. Two years later, in 2019, Kenya’s Ruth Chepngetich, the current world marathon champion, made her debut on the Dubai course and secured her first major win. Fast forward to 2025, when earlier this year, Ethiopian newcomer Bute Gemechu stormed to the men’s title on debut, clocking 2:04:51. In the women’s race, Berdatu Hirpa also struck gold for Ethiopia, shaving seconds off her personal best with a 2:18:27 finish after a thrilling duel with 2023 champion Dera Dida.
Dubai’s Visionary Sporting Future
Ahmed Al Kamali, General Coordinator of the Dubai Marathon, underscored Dubai’s peerless infrastructure, boundless energy, and visionary scale in hosting global sporting events.
“The marathon plays a major role in promoting Dubai as a leading tourist and sports hub. We look forward to welcoming runners from around the world as we celebrate the silver jubilee of the Dubai Marathon, the first international marathon in the Middle East.”
